  1. Green pigment present in the majority of
  2. plants, which is responsible for the
  3. absorption of light energy during the light
  4. reaction of photosynthesis. It absorbs the
  5. red and blue-violet parts of sunlight but
  6. reflects the green, thus giving the
  7. characteristic colour to most plants.
  8. Chlorophyll is found within chloroplasts,
  9. present in large numbers in the leaves.
  10. Cyanobacteria and other photosynthetic
  11. bacteria also have chlorophyll, though of a
  12. slightly different type. Chlorophyll is
  13. similar in structure to haemoglobin, but with
  14. magnesium instead of iron as the reactive
  15. part of the molecule.
